More than ever, art depends on the circulation of images through technological networks. While scholarship on this topic abounds in media studies, few publications in art history have accounted for this past and present reality. This seminar will explore the history of image circulation and examine its impact in art and visual culture; from the physical transportation of paintings to semaphores, from television to network art, and up to the postCOVID-19 boom of videoconferencing. Mandatory weekly readings, drawn from art history, media theory, and philosophy will pair historical foundations with contemporary case studies.
