Post-Picture Painting (1): Reinventing the Medium
Neither photography nor other kinds of new media managed to kill off painting as an artistic practice (« ceci n’a pas tué cela ! »). They rather helped defining its shape, boundaries, means and aims, acting in two different directions: on the one hand by enhancing the material specificity of painting as a medium (ce qui, dans la peinture, ne fait pas image); on the other hand, through its conceptual power, its capacity to address our relationship to images.
The first semester will be dedicated to the period between the 1960’s and the 1980’s, analyzing works of artists as prolific as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Malcom Moley, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, as well as critical texts theorizing the concept of medium.
The seminar will be given in French, paying special attention to international students. Some sections will be in English and international students will be encouraged to speak and read texts in English.
