  • Announcements

Hi everyone. Here is where you will find announcements about the class, as well as times and locations for the films you may join me in seeing for your film reviews.

  • Week 1 - Introduction

    Welcome everyone.

As we discussed in class, I have asked you to complete for homework a writing assignment: 150-200 words about either a) your summer; or b) your experience learning English in the past and what you hope to achieve this school year.

You can find a copy of our class syllabus attached. Please note that I have removed the group presentation that I mentioned in class as part of your evaluation. This means that you will only be evaluated based on four things: 1) the final 'partiel'; 2) a listening comprehension test; 3) an oral test; and 4) participation.

I look forward to working with all of you this year.

    All good things,
    Michael

  • Week 2

This week we will review some basic tenses, and focus on the differences between the past simple and present perfect.

We will also have a discussion about the legalization of marijuana, with a focus on the recent legalization in Canada, and watch a couple of videos on the topic (they will be posted here after the class).

Below you can download the grammar lesson and some exercises which we will take up in class.

    All good things,
    Michael

  • Week 3 - Education

This week we will begin by taking up last week's past simple/present perfect activities that I asked you to complete for homework.

For the main part of the class, we'll have a discussion about upper education in France and around the world. We will also watch a short video and complete a listening comprehension exercise about student loan debt in the United States. I've also added a link to another video by John Oliver about student debt in the U.S. We will not watch this video in class, but I encourage you to watch it if you're interested in learning a bit more (it's very funny, too!)

If we have time, we will also play a board game in order to get some practice using past simple and present perfect.

    All good things,
    Michael

  • Week 5 - Listening comprehension test

    Hi everyone,

This week, as you all know, is the listening comprehension test.

I have also posted here some exercises about the past perfect tense. Please read the lesson and complete the exercises for class next week (i.e. October 24/26).

    All good things,

    Michael

  • Week 6 - Climate Change

    Hi everyone,

This week we will begin by correcting last week's past perfect exercises as well as the listening comprehension test.

Then, we will move on to a reading comprehension and discussion exercise on the subject of climate change.

    All good things,

    Michael

  • Week 7 - Euthanasia

    Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a restful week off, and are ready to take on the second half of the semester.

This week, we will begin by taking up the grammar exercises on zero, first, and second conditionals (see attached file). Then, we will organize a series of debates around the controversial topic of euthanasia. If there is time, we will also read an article on euthanasia from the New York Times.

Remember - for those of you who wrote film reviews of either 'The Sisters Brothers' or 'First Man,' they are due in class this week.

    See you in class!

    All good things,
    Michael

  • Week 8 - Euthanasia debates & Oral test review

    Hi everyone,

This week we'll start by completing the debates on euthanasia. Then, we'll take up the grammar exercises about zero, first, and second conditional. Finally, we will spend some time reviewing the topics we have discussed so far in order to prepare for the oral exams.

Also, please check the 'annonces des enseignants' section for our third film review. This one will be on Netflix.

    See you this week!

    All good things,
    Michael

p.s. If you're looking for something to read, I've attached an article here that I was hoping we would have time to read in class. It's from the New York Times and deals with a doctor and his family's decision to euthanize their pet dog.

  • Weeks 9 & 10 - Oral Tests

    Hi everyone,

For these two classes (TDs 36, 37, 38 - November 21/28; TDs 60, 63 - November 23/30) we will be doing our oral tests.

Please find attached a schedule where you can see on which day you have your test. For these two weeks you only need to come to class on the day you have your exam!

    All good things,

    Michael

  • Week 11 - Modern Marriage

    Hi everyone,

This week we will look at the institution of marriage in modern society from a couple of different perspectives. Most of the class will be spent doing a reading comprehension exercise. We will also discuss the partiel next week.

    All good things,
    Michael
