Le projet
Le/la candidat·e retenu·e contribuera au projet ERC Advanced Grant Oecologie. The German Sources of Ecology (2025–2030), dirigé par Stefanie Buchenau. Le projet vise à mettre au jour les dimensions philosophiques de l’écologie introduite par Ernst Haeckel dans sa Morphologie générale (1866), et à en évaluer les implications plus larges.
Reposant sur une approche interdisciplinaire, il articule histoire des concepts, histoire de la philosophie et des sciences, esthétique et philologie. Il explore :
- l’émergence de la pensée écologique dans l’évolutionnisme européen du XIXe siècle
- ses sources philosophiques dans la tradition allemande (Kant, Humboldt, Goethe, etc.)
- sa réception complexe en Allemagne et au-delà
- son actualité pour les études environnementales et les sciences contemporaines
Le projet comprend de nombreux séminaires, workshops et conférences, une exposition scientifique, la constitution d’une base de données ainsi que le développement d’un site web.
Les trois contrats doctoraux
- Histoire des idées & humanités numériques
Le/la candidat·e retenu·e travaillera sur l’usage des humanités numériques en histoire des idées, à partir d’un corpus de textes, revues et correspondances allemandes du XIXe siècle.
Il/elle combinera méthodes historiques, philologiques et approches computationnelles. Il/elle sera formé·e aux outils numériques et pourra travailler sur :
- l’annotation de corpus
- l’analyse conceptuelle en linguistique historique
- la modélisation de la circulation des idées scientifiques et philosophiques dans différents contextes culturels
Une attention particulière sera accordée aux œuvres d’Ernst Haeckel, aux correspondances numérisées et aux réseaux intellectuels associés. Le projet inclut une réflexion méthodologique sur les approches quantitatives en histoire de la philosophie et des idées, avec possibilité de co-direction en linguistique ou humanités numériques.
- Alexander von Humboldt, réseaux franco-allemands et émergence de l’écologie
Le/la candidat·e retenu·e étudiera la formation des savoirs qui conduisent à l’émergence de l’écologie entre le XVIIIe et le XIXe siècle, dans une perspective franco-allemande et européenne.
Une attention particulière sera portée à Alexander von Humboldt et à ses réseaux parisiens.
Il/elle analysera la circulation des idées scientifiques à travers un corpus franco-allemand (textes, correspondances, archives parisiennes et allemandes), ainsi que les pratiques d’observation et de visualisation liées aux sciences naturelles modernes.
- La pensée écologique allemande : concepts, transformations et débats contemporains
Le/la candidat·e retenu·e s’inscrira dans une approche ouverte de l’histoire de l’écologie et de ses enjeux contemporains, en complément des deux autres contrats du projet ERC Oecologie.
Il/elle s’intéressera aux transformations qui ont accompagné l’émergence de l’écologie comme discipline scientifique, ainsi qu’aux cadres conceptuels et pratiques qui structurent encore aujourd’hui les sciences du vivant.
Une attention particulière sera portée aux débats contemporains en écologie et en sciences de l’environnement : biodiversité, niches écologiques, conservation, restauration des milieux, résilience, durabilité, gestion des écosystèmes et changement climatique.
Le projet invite à réfléchir aux outils conceptuels hérités de cette histoire, à leurs limites, et à leur pertinence pour penser les défis écologiques actuels.

The Project
The successful candidate will contribute to the ERC Advanced Grant Oecologie. The German Sources of Ecology (2025–2030), led by Stefanie Buchenau. The project aims to reconstruct the philosophical dimensions of ecology as introduced by Ernst Haeckel in General Morphology (1866), and to assess its broader implications.
Grounded in an interdisciplinary approach, it brings together intellectual history, history of philosophy and science, aesthetics, and philology. It investigates:
- the emergence of ecological thought within 19th-century European evolutionism
- its philosophical sources in the German tradition (Kant, Humboldt, Goethe, etc.)
- its complex reception in Germany and beyond
- its relevance for contemporary environmental studies and the sciences
The project includes regular seminars, workshops and conferences, a scientific exhibition, the creation of a research database, and the development of a project website.
The three doctoral positions
- History of Ideas & Digital Humanities
The successful candidate will work on the use of digital humanities in intellectual history, based on a corpus of 19th-century German texts, journals, and correspondence.
They will combine historical and philological methods with computational approaches. They will receive training in digital tools and may work on:
- corpus annotation
- conceptual analysis in historical linguistics
- modelling the circulation of scientific and philosophical ideas across cultural contexts
Special attention will be given to the works of Ernst Haeckel, digitised correspondence, and related intellectual networks. The project also includes a methodological reflection on quantitative approaches in the history of philosophy and intellectual history, with the possibility of co-supervision in linguistics or digital humanities.
- Alexander von Humboldt, French-German Networks and the Emergence of Ecology
The successful candidate will investigate the formation of knowledge that led to the emergence of ecology between the 18th and 19th centuries, in a French-German and broader European perspective.
Special attention will be given to Alexander von Humboldt and his Parisian networks.
They will analyse the circulation of scientific ideas through a French-German corpus (texts, correspondence, Paris and German archives), as well as observational and visual practices linked to modern natural sciences.
- German Ecological Thought: Concepts, Transformations and Contemporary Debates
The successful candidate will adopt an open approach to the history of ecology and its contemporary relevance, complementing the other two doctoral positions within the ERC Oecologie project.
They will focus on the transformation of ecology into a scientific discipline, conceptual frameworks structuring the life sciences today, and key contemporary debates in ecology and environmental science, including biodiversity, ecological niches, conservation, ecosystem restoration, resilience, sustainability, ecosystem management, and climate change.
The project invites reflection on inherited conceptual tools, their limits, and their relevance for contemporary ecological challenges.
