Course Objective:

This course reviews basic notions of Logic and Set Theory that will be needed as background for most of the advanced mathematic courses. It also aims to familiarize students with abstract mathematical thinking.

General Presentation:

Basic set theory: Sets and elements, subsets, Venn diagrams, set operations, algebra of sets, power sets.
Relations: Product sets, relations, types of relations (reflexive, symmetric, antisymmetric, transitive, complete), equivalence relation, partitions, partial ordering, preorder.
Functions: Direct image, inverse image, functions as relations, composition, graph, one-to-one, onto and invertible functions, inverse function.
Logic and propositional calculus: Propositions, necessary and suficient conditions, basic logical operations (conjunction, disjunction, negation) and their truth tables, tautologies, contradictions and equivalence, algebra of propositions. Quantifiers, quantified statement and its negation.
