It is a long-standing American tradition for former U.S. presidents to establish a presidential library and museum to preserve their legacy.
Timed with the opening of the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, this semester, our curriculum centers on the theme of Obamastalgia, offering a comprehensive exploration of Barack Obama’s presidency through its cultural and political legacy, as well as its historical achievements.
We will examine how political communication, charismatic storytelling, and coolness contributed to shaping his global image and political identity.
Building on this foundation, we will analyze the legacy and ongoing policy debates surrounding his major achievements, ranging from his famous healthcare reform Obamacare to foreign relations and social progress.
This course will address the profound historical significance of the first Black presidency, tackling complex issues of race relations, and identity.
Ultimately, our goal will be to move beyond romanticized memories in order to critically distinguish hope from nostalgia, assessing which lessons from the Obama era remain genuinely relevant in today's world.
